The Grumman F4F Wildcat carrier-based fighter aircraft became a true legend during its long and very successful service, despite the fact that it was no longer the latest in aviation technology in 1941-42. It gained fame especially on the Pacific battlefield in the hands of pilots of the US Navy and the US Marine Corps (USMC). Another significant user of F4F fighters was the British carrier-based air force (Air Branch, usually called the Fleet Air Arm). The serial production of Wildcats ran in several versions and by 1945 produced around 7900 units. The parent company built only 1540 units by May 1943 and then switched to the production of the more powerful F6F Hellcats. The production of a large part of the aircraft was thus carried out under license by General Motors Co.
In this publication, we will look at the broader circumstances of the creation and history of the initial fixed-wing Wildcat variants entered into service with the US Navy and USMC, the Grumman F4F-3 and F4F-3A.
The publication is A4 format, full-color on high-quality coated paper, V2 binding, 52 pages, many photos, color side views.
