In the late 1960s, Lockheed marketed a commercial version of the USAF C-5A Galaxy to commercial airlines in an effort to increase sales of the costly aircraft. Dubbed the L-500, the aircraft was first ordered by Pan American World Airways. Not to be outdone by his arch-rival, Howard Hughes ensured that Trans World Airlines (TWA) also ordered the behemoth. Four aircraft were delivered in TWAs "Twin Globe" scheme with a white upper fuselage and vertical stabilizer, red arrow cheatline, and bare metal belly.
