As the Battle of Britain ended in the fall of 1940, so did one of the most important chapters in the extraordinarily rich history of the Messerschmitt Bf 109E. However, the "Emily", now represented mainly by the Bf 109E-7 variant, still had a long career in Luftwaffe service. At the beginning of 1941, their operational activity spread from Western and Northern Europe further south. Although the Mediterranean and North Africa represented from the point of view of the German command, which was now already preparing to attack Stalin's Soviet Union, a secondary operational area, the Bf 109E intervened in the engagement here with extraordinary success.
In this part of the series, we will take a closer look at the deployment of German fighters in the battles over Malta and North Africa during Rommel's attempt to take control of the besieged port of Tobruk in the spring of 1941. However, the outcome of the air battles of the Second World War was not only decided in the cockpits of the fighters, but also in the aircraft factories industry. Therefore, here we summarize the production of the Messerschmitt Bf 109E during 1940 and compare it with fighter production in the United Kingdom.
